Biomass has been in use at the University of Missouri power plant since 2005. The power plant boilers have been cofiring wood waste up to 5 percent with coal in the existing plant boilers, consuming between 5,000 and 6,000 tons of woody biomass this year.

Our View: Future of wood-fired plants key energy issue

A study that says biomass plants are worse than oil is not the last word on this subject.

Studies in Massachusetts and nationally conclude that biomass -- the burning of wood and other organic matter for electricity and heat -- can make climate change worse and devastate forests. They warn that renewable energy policies at the state and federal levels ignore these risks and will worsen the threat.

Finland puts emphasis on renewable wooden energy in order to mitigate climate change

Forests / Waelder: Klimawandel, Klimaänderung

Finland’s forests are a substantial carbon sink. In 2008 Finland’s forests sequestrated 35 million tons of CO2. In Finland strong emphasis has been put on the mitigation issues by promoting the use of wood. These actions include the increased use of wood-based bioenergy (including biofuels) and wooden construction. Harvested wood products make up a considerable carbon store that has gradually increased since the 1990s.

Good Practice Guidance on the Sustainable Mobilization of Wood in Europe

Forest products markets / Holzproduktmärkte: Biomasse, Energie aus Holzbiomasse, Bioenergie, Forest energy, Biomass, Bioenergy

According to a new publication, if Europe is to achieve its renewable energy objective of 20% by 2020, it must step up the supply of wood from its sustainably managed forests.  In Europe, only 60% of the annual natural growth of the forests is currently being harvested. For a sustainable energy future, however, this is not near enough.

By 2025, a quarter of Nevada’s energy must come from renewable sources

NV Energy’s experimental use of wood chips in one of its coal plants was a bit of a flop, but the utility and state officials are hoping it will wind up being the first step toward using waste wood that is stacking up in Nevada.
