New Zealand Log Prices - June 2010

Forest products markets / Holzproduktmärkte: Roundwood, Rundholz

Countries / Laender

April 2010 was a month where record volumes of pinus radiata logs were shipped out of New Zealand. The vast majority were headed for Asia where other suppliers such as the USA and Canada, are also ramping up supply. The ability of Asia and in particular China, to absorb the increased supply, is being tested. However, it appears that despite the influx, inventories in China have been reduced. In-market (CFR) prices for KS and KI logs to China and Korea have softened a little in the past month to be at US$134/JASm3 and US$129/JASm3 respectively.

Forestry Ministry Zulkifli Hasan said the Finance Ministry had agreed to proposals to remove value-added tax (VAT) imposed on log products.

He claimed former finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati had signed a proposal to cancel the tax when she was in the office.

“[Mulyani] agreed to cancel VAT for log products. The regulation will take effect this month. This is good as it will not burden industries because raw materials were not supposed to be taxed,” he said Sunday.

VANCOUVER, B.C. - British Columbia's forests minister says the outlook for the lumber sector in the province's Interior, ravaged by the mountain pine beetle, isn't as pessimistic as an industry report issued this week.

Pat Bell was commenting on a forecast by analysts at Vancouver's International Wood Markets Group, which warns the peak of sawlog availability will occur within three to five years, after which the Interior's industry is headed for serious downsizing.

New Zealand 2010: Timber shortage expected to bump up prices by 10%

Forest products markets / Holzproduktmärkte: Sägeindustrie, Schnittholz, Lumber, Roundwood, Sägerundholz, sawlogs, Woodworking industry, Saw milling industry

The cost of building timber will rise by up to 10 per cent from next month due to a severe supply shortage and booming international demand for New Zealand pine.

Shortages are developing across a wide range of product lines, the Timber Industry Federation says in its latest newsletter.

Big reductions in production due to plant closures and reduced work times have more than offset the downturn in domestic construction, the federation says.

Forest Companies Fined for Price-Fixing

Forest products markets / Holzproduktmärkte: Papier- und Zellstoffindustrie, Pulpwood, Roundwood, Rundholz, Sägerundholz, Holzfaser/Faser+ Schleifholz, Woodworking industry, Saw milling industry

The Market Court has fined forest products giants Metsäliitto Cooperative and Stora Enso a total of 51 million euros for running a price cartel.

The court ruled on Thursday that the companies cooperated in raw lumber pricing for more than seven years beginning in 1997.

The ruling says that Metsäliitto and Stora Enso's forest directors met regularly and tried to influence future pricing, applying pressure on those who paid more than the average for timber.

New Delhi, Nov. 10, 2009 (RISI) - Although the growth in softwood log imports in India is impressive, at least 80% of India's log imports are hardwood. Teak logs are imported from Myanmar, various African countries, and Central and South America. According to ITTO data, prices for teak logs imported into India range from less than $300/m3 for logs from Panama to more than $500/m3 for logs from some African countries. Of course, prices for larger, older teak from Myanmar can command much higher prices.
