Carbon Cap and Trade - green gambling?

Forests / Waelder: Handel (-Zertifikaten), trading, Klimawandel, Klimaänderung, Climate change, Carbon, Kohlenstoff

You've heard of credit default swaps and subprime mortgages. Are carbon default swaps and subprime offsets next? If the Waxman-Markey climate bill is signed into law, it will generate, almost as an afterthought, a new market for carbon derivatives. That market will be vast, complicated, and dauntingly difficult to monitor. And if Washington doesn't get the rules right, it will be vulnerable to speculation and manipulation by the very same players who brought us the financial meltdown.

A profitable rainforest!(?)

Countries / Laender

A MOST unusual document landed on your correspondent’s desk recently: a financial report from a rainforest. Iwokrama, a 370,000-hectare rainforest in central Guyana, announced that it was in profit. It added, more intriguingly, that rainforests had entered the “global economy”.

Waxman-Markey: How US lobbying works

Forests / Waelder: Klimawandel, Klimaänderung, Climate change

July 14, 2009: The landmark American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 that narrowly passed through Congress on June 26 has come under fire by environmental critics who see the pared down measure as too little, too late. Originally proposed by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Edward Markey (D-MA), the bill went through the wringer on the Hill, coming out with a number of amendments and omissions.

Consumption and trade in paper and board contracted further during the first quarter of 2009 as the global economic downturn continued to affect the industry. Consumption was at its lowest quarterly level since 2003 and total exports fell below 3 million tonnes in a quarter for the first time since this report was introduced.

Forest products markets / Holzproduktmärkte: Northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK), Papier- und Zellstoffindustrie, Pulp, Zellstoff, Pulp- and Paperindustry

29.6.2009: For the second consecutive month, pulp producers are taking advantage of tighter supply conditions, if not better demand, and are seeking price hikes worldwide. For July, increases have been announced for softwood and hardwoods for North America, Europe and China/Asia. The hikes are generally $20-$30/tonne, but a $20-$40 increases for North American NBSK would put the list at $700.

Pulp&Paper investments to accelerate anew in China

Forest products markets / Holzproduktmärkte: Papier- und Zellstoffindustrie, Pulp- and Paperindustry

I have recently been talking to several suppliers and producers in the pulp and paper industry in Asia, and the good news is that it looks as if the Chinese pulp and paper market is on a fast expansion track again. There are new projects, big and small, signed or under discussion again in the recent months, after a quiet period since late last year.
