Renewables/Erneuerbare Energien
PORTSMOUTH - Wood chips are already starting to pile up in a storage building at Schiller Station in Portsmouth while construction workers put the finishing touches on a boiler that will burn the chips to generate electricity.
The wood-burning power project, which is owned by Public Service Co. of New Hampshire, is a model of the type of plant North Country lawmakers would like to see in Berlin to help offset the closing of the pulp mill. The $75 million Seacoast project is expected to begin generating electricity in August
A Wisconsin businessman wants to build a $100 million wood pellet-making plant at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge and sell the material as fuel overseas.
William New, a consultant to the wood pulp industry, said the plant would tap the local timber industry to provide raw material for a product that he and other proponents say would have a negligible effect on the environment while giving the state a much-needed economic opportunity.
New said the plant would create 87 direct jobs and support about 870 timber-related jobs.
