There was book published back in 2003 and written by David W. Pearce, Francis E. Putz and Jerome K. Vanclay titled with “Sustainable forestry in the tropics : panacea or folly?”. It’s an interesting book coming up with some very clever ideas long before the PLUS-part of REDD has been born.

July, 19, 2010 - The EU (the European Parliament) has approved legislation which prohibits the sale of timber logged illegally under the rules of the country of origin. In addition, companies must use a system of 'due diligence' to ascertain that the timber they sell in the EU was harvested legally. The European Council has already agreed to support the legislation and is expected to formally adopt it in September 2010.

What is, by its core intention, a good cause.  A lot of eNGOs, news media and others applauded. We do as well.

Recently someone sent me a special issue about Ecosystem Services of the EU DG environment

When starting to read this leaflet I began to realize the difficulties of Central European Foresters (CEF) in understanding why the rest of the (biology/ecology/forestry) world is going to have endless discussions on how to differ between biodiversity and ecosystem services when applying forest management.

Wieso die EU Agrarpolitik die Entwaldung von Regenwäldern forciert oder anders gefragt: wieso bekämpft die EU illegale Holzschlägerungen, nicht aber Entwaldung?
