Illegal logging

The European Union (EU) isn't able (or willing) to get the idea of Forests issues...

July, 19, 2010 - The EU (the European Parliament) has approved legislation which prohibits the sale of timber logged illegally under the rules of the country of origin. In addition, companies must use a system of 'due diligence' to ascertain that the timber they sell in the EU was harvested legally. The European Council has already agreed to support the legislation and is expected to formally adopt it in September 2010.

What is, by its core intention, a good cause.  A lot of eNGOs, news media and others applauded. We do as well.

Trucks loaded with undressed timber are on the move again around Buchanan in Grand Bassa county, south-east Liberia.

The dust recalls the not-so-distant time when the timber trade was synonymous with war.

European Parliament votes to cut illegal timber out of the EU market

Forests / Waelder: Illegal logging, Illegale Holzschlägerungen, FLEG

The European Parliament has voted in favour of legislation banning illegally logged timber imports into the European Union. The new legislation bans illegally-harvested timber or timber products from being placed on the EU market. This will prevent such wood from effectively being laundered once it reaches the EU. Currently, at least 20% of timber and timber products reaching the EU market is estimated to come from illegal sources.

On May 15th the West African nation of Gabon implemented a total ban on log exports. According to the International Timber Trade Organization (ITTO) the ban has been efficiently enforced to date and log exports from Gabon have "completely halted".

ITTO also reports that around 60,000 cubic meters of logs meant mostly for China remains in port, halted by the ban. However, the drop in log exports by Gabon appears to have pushed logging in nearby Cameroon.
