Mondi : Appointment of non-executive director

South Africa, Feb 23, 2011 - The Mondi Group is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Harris as an independent non-executive director with effect from 1 March 2011. He will replace Colin Matthews who will be stepping down at the conclusion of the Annual General Meetings on 5 May 2011.

Colin has been with the Mondi Group since its demerger from Anglo American plc in 2007.

Minister commits to deliver on climate change targets

Johannesburg - South Africa plans to address the impact of climate change by reducing carbon emissions by at least 43 percent in the next decade while a series of strict measures will also be put in place to avert pollution by the country's mines.

This is contained in a delivery agreement document signed by Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Buyelwa Sonjica on Thursday. Several Cabinet ministers are also in line to sign agreements over the next few weeks that outline the government's 12 outcomes to improve performance and service delivery.

Mondi transfers 258 ha to KZN community

Paper and packaging group Mondi has concluded its ninth land restitution settlement, transferring 258 ha of its forestry land to members of the Mkhwanazi community, in Port Durnford, in KwaZulu-Natal.

The members of the community will gain ownership of the land through the Phalane Trust and plan to derive a sustainable income from the land, while simultaneously progressively developing their own businesses to operate along the forestry value chain.

Sappi Waste Paper becomes Sappi ReFibre

Paper and packaging group Sappi has renamed its secondary fibre division, formerly known as Sappi Waste Paper, to Sappi ReFibre.

This formed part of the group’s commitment to sustainability and to recycle paper and reduce waste.

Mondi reports interim profit, sees strong second half

A strong performance for its Europe & International division and improving conditions in its South Africa division have led to paper and packaging group Mondi reporting interim headline earnings a share of €0,24 a share.

This compared to a headline loss a share of €0,01 a share in the six months ended June 30, 2009.

Profit from continuing operations rose to €135-million in the six months ended June 30, 2010, compared with a loss of €24-million the year before.
