Growing number of mega-fires may contribute to global warming

10 May 2011, Rome/Sun City - Whilst changing climatic conditions may be exacerbating the growing number of mega-fires round the world, these fires may also themselves be a contributing factor to global warming, said FAO in a report presented today at the 5th International Wildland Fire Conference in Sun City, South Africa.

The agency called upon countries to implement more comprehensive fire management strategies and improve the monitoring of wildfire carbon gas emissions that cause global warming.

EU signs a deal with Liberia to end trade of illegal timber

The European Union and the Government of Liberia, which presides over half of the remaining rainforest in West Africa, announced today a landmark agreement to ensure that all Liberian timber products exported from Liberia to the EU are derived from legal sources and that the resulting trade will benefit the Liberian people. EFIs EU FLEGT Facility provided technical support to the preparation, negotiation and implementation of FLEGT Voluntary Partnership Agreement in Liberia.

Pilot Study For Production Of Green Oil From Forest Residues

Sweden, May 9, 2011 - Billerud is to evaluate the technical and market prerequisites for lignocellulose-based pyrolysis products. The project goal is to manufacture green oil from forest residues such as branches, tops and stumps. The green oil can then be turned into renewable energy in customers’ facilities.

ANDRITZ To Deliver Biomass Handling System For Iggesund Paperboard, UK

UK, May 9, 2011 - International technology Group ANDRITZ has received a further order from Holmen AB’s subsidiary, Iggesund Paperboard Ltd., to deliver a wood-based biomass receiving and handling system for Iggesund’s paperboard mill Workington in Cumbria, UK. The start-up is scheduled for April 2013.

Ilim Group Mills in Siberia Manufacture 367,000 tons of Pulp and Paper Products

St. Petersburg, Russia, May 3, 2011 - Over the first quarter of 2011 the Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk Branches of Ilim Group has manufactured 367,000 tons of pulp and paper products. This is 2.5% more than in January — March of the previous year.

This includes 309,000 tons of market pulp, which is a 2% percent increase from the similar period performance in 2010.

Market containerboard production has reached 58,000 tons, having gained 7%.
