Forest Industry Requests EU Commission to Evaluate the Fairness of the Planned Energy Subsidy for Small-Diameter Trees

Finland, Apr 22, 2011 - The Finnish Forest Industries Federation has asked the EU Commission to evaluate whether Finland’s planned energy subsidy for small-diameter trees is fair for all buyers of wood.
An energy subsidy for small-diameter trees is necessary, but it must be scaled appropriately so that it increases the supply of wood both for energy production and pulp and paper processing.

Sluggish Timber Sales Continue in March

Finland, April 7, 2011 - The forest industry purchased one million cubic metres of timber from private forests in March, almost a third more than in February. Birch pulpwood must be imported, because the supply in Finland is insufficient.
Demand for timber is good and there’s particular interest in stands, which can be harvested in summer.

The aggregate January-March purchase volume, 2.8 million cubic metres, was down more than a fifth from the corresponding period of 2010.

ANDRITZ to Supply Biomass Boiler Island for Hämeenkyrön Voima, Finland

Graz, Austria, Mar 18, 2011 - International technology Group ANDRITZ has been awarded an order by Hämeenkyrön Voima Oy to supply an 80MWth fluidized bed steam boiler using as main fuel wood-based biomass and milled peat as additional fuel for its power plant in Hämeenkyrö, Finland. The project investors are Pohjolan Voima, M-real and Leppäkosken Sähkö. Start-up of the boiler is scheduled for the autumn of 2012.

UPM Applies for FSC certification for its Own Forests in Finland

UPM, Helsinki, 15 March 2011 at 11:00 EET) - UPM applies for FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification for its forests in Finland. At the same time UPM also extends its forest service portfolio to cover FSC-certification
services to Finnish forest owners. UPM's forests and most of the privately owned forests in Finland are already certified under PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes).
