Bell’s new high powered haulage tractor

Source: Timberbiz The Series V leans heavily on Bell Equipment’s tried and tested haulage tractor heritage, with its unique characteristics that make it a better tool for haulage than a typical agricultural ploughing tractor. The fabricated steel chassis, heavy duty rear axle and hitch positioning ahead of the axle centre line, for improved load transfer, steering and traction when trailers are fully loaded have all been retained along with key safety features, such as the ROPS/FOPS certified cab and pneumatic trailer braking. The current range consists of the smaller 140hp (104kW) Bell 1406A and 1406AF models as well as the 173hp (129kW) Bell 1736A and 1736AF, where ‘A’ and ‘AF’ denote 2WD and 4WD configurations respectively. According to Bell Equipment Product Manager, Emile van Wyk, the 4WD Bell 2006AF boasts a 15% power increase over the 173hp (129kW) units. “We’ve built the 2006AF on the trusted and proven Series V platform, so it maintains all that our customers have become accustomed to in our Haulage Tractors. Plus, more power means the engine doesn’t work as hard to haul its load, which carries numerous operational benefits,” he explained. Driven by the 6,8l John Deere engine, it provides 785Nm of torque through the Allison automatic transmission, enabling it to comfortably haul on-road at speeds of up to 40km/h. And, like the other models, the engine achieves Tier 3 emissions certification without the need for a complex exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. According to Mr van Wyk, the 2006AF has rear disc brakes for more efficient braking and handles undulating terrain with ease thanks to the automatic 4×4 feature that detects wheelspin and engages 4×4 until grip is restored and disengages again. “One of our prototypes has clocked over 5 000 hours hauling 40t loads of timber for a Namibian biomass customer. It travels for distances up to 65km at a time and has been reported to be the best machine on site,” he said.  

USDA announces $200M to increase timber harvesting

US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced a bold US$200 million investment to implement the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service’s National Active Forest Management Strategy, a key initiative to increase timber harvest, improve forest health and productivity, reduce wildfire risk, and support rural prosperity in forest communities. Source: Timberbiz The strategy supports President Trump’s Executive Order: Immediate Expansion of Timber Production by streamlining burdensome regulations, leveraging emergency authorities, and expediting project approvals ensuring faster access to critical timber resources. Increasing the use of long-term contracts to carry out these projects, the strategy envisions a more stable supply of wood products, healthier forests, and stronger rural economies. “President Trump is committed to cutting red tape, rolling back burdensome regulations and unleashing the potential of America’s abundant natural resources. “We are doing just that at USDA with this announcement to invest in timber production. This is a win for consumers who will see better prices with American grown products, and a win for forest management which will help keep our forests safer and reduce wildfire risk,” said Secretary Rollins. “Not only will this help our staff on the ground better carry out the mission of protecting lives, livelihoods and resources, it will support jobs in rural America and reduce our reliance on foreign lumber imports.” This work to increase domestic timber harvests implements Secretary Rollins’ memorandum to the Forest Service to take immediate action in support. In response, the Forest Service has committed to increasing timber harvest on national forests by 25%, with an overall goal of four billion board feet harvested annually by fiscal year 2028. Using tools like Good Neighbor Authority, this investment will support efforts to work across jurisdictions and property lines to improve forest health and grow economies in communities nationwide. This investment also focuses on innovative wood products like cross-laminated timber, which due to its strength in comparison to steel, is used in commercial building construction. Similarly, active management often creates byproducts with a low conventional wood market value, but are still useful in wood energy, pellets, and other biomass applications. These investments have direct impacts on communities and businesses in the wood products sector, supporting jobs in timber harvest, at lumber mills, as well as in innovative wood products and energy sectors. These landmark investments secure a strong domestic timber supply, fuelling rural industries, stabilizing markets, and driving long-term economic prosperity.  

Wooden nails can enhance timber structures

Researchers have demonstrated that wooden nail connections, when optimized for factors like nail diameter, sheathing material, and spacing, can significantly enhance the shear performance of timber structures, offering a viable, sustainable alternative to metal fasteners. Source: AZO Build A recent study published in the Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts explored this potential through a series of monotonic loading tests. The research focused on how variables such as sheathing panel material (oriented strand board [OSB] and structural plywood [SP]), panel thickness (9.5 and 12 mm), nail diameter (3.7 and 4.7 mm), spacing (50 and 100 mm), and cap configuration influence joint performance. Modern timber construction often relies on light wood-frame systems due to their use of standardized dimensional lumber and ease of prefabrication. These benefits help streamline construction and reduce labor costs. These systems also offer environmental advantages, such as lower foundation loads and reduced energy use in material transport. Historically, metal fasteners like smooth nails, angle brackets, and screws have been the go-to for connecting wood components. However, their long-term durability can be compromised in environments with fluctuating humidity and temperature. In contrast, densified wooden nails have emerged as a more sustainable alternative, offering continuous production capabilities and better environmental compatibility. By fine-tuning high-density thermosetting resin formulations and pneumatic gun technology, wooden nails can form strong chemical and mechanical bonds with wood. This enables automated assembly and enhances overall production efficiency. The study set out to assess whether these eco-friendly connectors could hold their own in structural applications like wood-frame shear walls. The research team used structural-grade spruce-pine-fir (SPF) lumber (38 × 89 mm) and compressed beech wooden nails, both with and without caps. Nail configurations included 4.7 × 58 mm (with caps) and 3.7 × 60 mm or 4.7 × 65 mm (without caps). Test specimens were designed according to Chinese National Standards for timber structures and consisted of SPF lumber elements (240, 250, and 340 mm in length) paired with 300 × 100 mm sheathing panels. These were assembled using a pneumatic wooden nail gun operating at 0.6–0.8 MPa. Mechanical testing was conducted using a universal testing machine rated at 100 kN. To supplement physical testing, a full-scale finite element model was developed using OpenSees to simulate shear wall behaviour. The model used 4.7 mm diameter wooden nails without caps, based on earlier test results, and evaluated performance across different sheathing types, thicknesses, and under both monotonic and low-cycle reciprocating loads. Three main failure modes were observed: tearing and warping of sheathing panel fibres, shear failure of wooden nails, and fibre tearing in SPF lumber. Nails often fractured at the junction between sheathing and framing members, typically breaking into two or three segments. Key findings showed that larger nail diameters and thicker sheathing panels led to higher load-bearing capacity. SP sheathing outperformed OSB in terms of both peak load and joint stiffness. The inclusion of nail caps and closer nail spacing further improved shear resistance, with larger-diameter nails showing the best overall performance. These results were largely attributed to the increased contact surface between the nail, sheathing, and framing material. Thicker panels also allowed for deeper embedment, enhancing the strength of the dowel bearing zone. This study offers strong evidence that carefully engineered wooden nail connections can enhance the shear performance of timber joints. It also demonstrated, through full-scale finite element modelling, how different sheathing configurations impact the lateral resistance of wood-frame shear walls. However, the research was limited to monotonic loading; additional studies are needed to assess how these connections perform under cyclic or extreme conditions. Understanding their hysteretic behaviour will be key to fully validating their use in structural applications. Future work should also explore other sustainable fasteners, such as wood-based adhesives, and refine modelling techniques to account for dynamic loads, material aging, and moisture effects. These steps will be essential for advancing the role of wood-based connectors in resilient, energy-efficient building systems. Wang, S. et al. (2025). Place of Koala places highly in Asian awards for excellence

Guulabaa – Place of Koala, the world’s first purpose-built wild koala breeding and rehabilitation centre, has been named a winner of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) 2025 Asia Pacific Awards for Excellence. Source: Timberbiz Announced at the ULI Asia Pacific Summit in Hong Kong, the award recognises Guulabaa as a global exemplar of conservation-led design, Indigenous collaboration, and resilient land stewardship. Presented by the Urban Land Institute, the Awards for Excellence are among the region’s most respected honours in real estate and urban development, celebrating projects that raise the bar for design quality, sustainability, and positive community impact. Guulabaa is one of only 12 winners across the Asia Pacific, and one of just two from Australia to be recognised this year. Developed by the Forestry Corporation of New South Wales and designed by global architecture and design firm Gensler, Guulabaa was conceived in direct response to the catastrophic 2019–2020 Black Summer bushfires, which impacted koala habitats across the region. The project is grounded in deep collaboration with First Nations communities and integrates traditional cool burning practices to reduce bushfire risk and restore forest health. This approach also enabled the use of local sustainably sourced native hardwoods in construction, setting a benchmark for ecologically responsible and culturally informed design. “Guulabaa challenged us to rethink what regenerative architecture should be. It is not about making a bold statement, but about designing with care, deep listening, and respect for Country,” said Ken McBryde, Design Director at Gensler Australia. “This project shows what is possible when we listen to our client, stakeholders, project partners, and First Nations knowledge holders, and design with long-term impact in mind. We are honoured that ULI has recognised that vision.” Set within a 25-hectare site in Cowarra State Forest, NSW, Guulabaa, meaning “Place of Koala” in the local Gathang language, offers a unique blend of conservation, cultural storytelling, and eco-tourism. Visitors experience elevated timber walkways, immersive educational spaces, and First Nations-led narratives that deepen understanding of wildlife, heritage, and environmental stewardship. “Guulabaa is about more than protecting koalas. It brings people together, across generations, cultures, and disciplines to care for Country and build a shared future where nature and community thrive,” said Kathy Lyons, Senior Manager, Country and Community, Forestry Corporation of NSW. “Its success is already inspiring similar projects across New South Wales, and ULI’s recognition affirms that this model is both powerful and scalable when approached with care and respect.” Guulabaa now serves as a flagship model for forest-based conservation infrastructure in Australia, inspiring four additional forest tourism sites across NSW. It stands as a compelling demonstration of how design, Indigenous knowledge and environmental stewardship can come together to protect biodiversity, support sustainable.  

Town and city bushfire protection case studies

Town and city bushfire protection case studies – prescribed burning and other adaptive management and mitigation have assisted in restricting bushfire impacts on communities across Australia and the US. Source: John O’Donnell There have been many bushfires that have had major impacts on towns and cities, indeed many that were bushfire disasters. However, there have been many cases where prescribed burning, mechanical treatments/ thinning, active management options and grazing have resulted in reduced impacts on towns and cities or in some cases stopped bushfires completely. This is an especially good outcome considering the mostly small areas and scattered locations of bushfire mitigation often used across Australia, including prescribed burning, mechanical treatment and grazing, in most Australian states. The full review is included here. A number of these bushfire case studies are outlined within Section 2 (of the review) in Australia, covering 25 case studies.  The author appreciates the fact that a number of these case studies were written up, in some cases a number of case studies together. A number of these bushfire case studies are outlined within Section 3 in the US, covering nine case studies. Valuable lessons captured from the case studies and identification of potential opportunities for the future are outlined in Section 4.1 to 4.8.  Key lesson areas highlighted in those sections, there are a large number of lessons and opportunity areas. Failure to fully utilise the benefits of economic returns on investment disaster mitigation and preparation is to Australia’s loss. The current inefficiency of what is happening in relation to Australian bushfire disaster funding and management is highlighted in Section 4.7 It would be valuable for bushfire personnel, communities and politicians to consider these lesson areas and the many opportunities available to improve community and fire fighter safety and budget efficiency opportunities.

NZ forest owners agree reform will address some forestry challenges

Source: Timberbiz Announced by Forestry Minister Todd McClay, the reform looks to tighten and clarify the conditions under which councils can impose rules more stringent than the NES-CF and review forestry operations requirements for management of harvest debris. New Zealand Forest Owners Association chief executive Dr Elizabeth Heeg says the forestry sector has long called for clearer, nationally consistent regulation that provides certainty for growers. “Forest owners have been subject to a growing patchwork of conflicting council rules that contradict national policy,” Dr Heeg said. “Over time, these local variations have disrupted forestry operations, jeopardised long-term investment and undermined confidence in one of New Zealand’s most sustainable and regionally significant industries. “The NES-CF was originally designed to ensure national consistency in how forestry is managed. It’s hoped that, from our initial reading, these proposed changes will help restore that intent and recognise the vital role forestry plays in New Zealand’s economic and environmental future.” Dr Heeg says forestry is not looking for a regulatory pass but a fair, science-based regulatory environment that reflects forestry’s important contributions to sustainable fibre production, biodiversity and climate outcomes and regional employment. “It’s critical that the reform strikes a careful balance between enabling operational efficiency and strong environmental safeguards by remaining rooted in scientifically supported change,” she aid. Dr Heeg says the proposed introduction of a mandatory Slash Mobilisation Risk Assessment could be a constructive, practical tool for the industry that will reinforce the work the sector is already undertaking to mitigate climate-induced risk. “We want to be good neighbours, and we want to operate to high standards,” Dr Heeg said. “But we need a framework that’s predictable, proportionate and nationally coherent. That’s what these changes could offer.” Consultation on the proposed changes to the NES-CF is open until 27 July 2025 through the Ministry for the Environment’s website. The NZFOA encourages all those with a stake in the future of forestry in New Zealand including landowners, wood processors, regional communities and iwi to engage with the consultation process.

NZ government working to undo any forestry red tape

The New Zealand Government is taking firm action to ensure commercial forestry, one of New Zealand’s most productive and sustainable export sectors, is not stifled by red tape and inconsistent council rules Minister of Forestry Todd McClay announced. Source: Timberbiz Public consultation opens this week on proposed amendments to the National Environmental Standards for Commercial Forestry (NES-CF), aimed at restoring national consistency and protecting the sector’s right to operate. “Our fibre sector from forestry to wood processors plays a crucial role in New Zealand’s economy, particularly in regional communities,” Mr McClay said. “These changes are about getting foresters and wood processors back in the driver’s seat and stopping councils from using their plans to rewrite the rules on forestry through the back door.” The current NES-CF was designed to provide a nationally consistent framework for managing the environmental effects of plantation forestry. However, recent changes have allowed councils to bypass that intent by imposing more stringent rules without justification, a trend that is now undermining investment and confidence in the sector. Key proposed changes include: Clarifying regulation 6(1)(a) to tighten the conditions under which a council can impose rules that are more stringent than national direction. Repealing regulation 6(4A), which currently gives councils broad discretion to override the NES-CF for afforestation without justification. Strengthening slash management by requiring a Slash Mobilisation Risk Assessment as part of all harvest management plans and considering refining requirements to remove all slash above a certain size from forest cutovers. Tidying up the NES-CF with minor amendments to remove duplication and improve clarity for foresters and councils alike. “We are hearing loud and clear from the forestry sector – and from regional New Zealand – that the current rules aren’t working,” Mr McClay said. “Too many councils are starting to use vague discretion to block or delay forestry operations that meet national environmental standards. That’s not what the system was designed for, so we’re fixing it.” The forestry sector has been vocal about the need for a consistent regulatory environment that enables long-term planning and sustainable growth. These proposed changes are intended to support that vision while still managing environmental risks, including from storm events and slash. “This Government backs the fibre sector – and that means making sure regulation is clear, practical, and nationally consistent,” Mr McClay said. “Whether you’re planting trees, harvesting them, or processing them into world-leading products, you shouldn’t be subject to a different set of rules just because of which council you happen to fall under.” Consultation on the proposed changes to the NES-CF is now open via the Ministry for the Environment’s website and will run until 27 July 2025.
