Arkhangelsk region to get new project

Novye Lesnye Technologies (New Timber Technologies, St. Petersburg) is to invest over RUR11.8 mln (€ 300 th.) in construction of a mill for advanced timber processing in the Arkhangelsk region.

The mill is to produce wooden boards and chipboards with annual capacity making up 250 th. cubic meters and 325 th. cubic meters respectively.

Besides, the mill will have a sawmilling facility (100 th. cubic meters per year) and glued log production (15 th. cubic meters per year).

Worry over foreign "carbon foresters"

Foreign-owned "carbon foresters" have ambitions to turn a fifth of New Zealand sheep and beef farmland into forests and that will devastate many rural towns, the national farmers' lobby says.

Federated Farmers president Don Nicolson said the organisation strongly believed that farm forestry was integral to farms where suited. This made the government's axing of the Afforestation Grants Scheme (AGS) in preference to the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) "incredibly perplexing".

China mudslides were predicted 13 years ago

Monster monsoon rains may have loosened the mud and rock that buried and killed more than 1,000 people in the northwestern Chinese Province of Gansu over the weekend, but the mudslide in Zhouqu was more than a natural disaster.

Official records show that government-run lumber companies cut 313,000 acres of forest from the slopes of Zhouqu county between 1952 and 1990, denuding the geologically vulnerable mountainsides and subjecting them to soil erosion.
