When looking at the remarkably complex world of carbon offset, REDD+, sustainable forestry and natural resource management, Mexico is emerging as one of the world’s leading open-air laboratories.

Taraba State of Nigeria is aiming to becoming the second REDD Pilot State in the country after Cross River, which is on the verge of accessing funds set aside under the climate change mitigation programme.

JOHOR BAHARU, March 21 (Bernama) - Illegal loggers beware! The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is getting more aggressive in its war against illegal logging in the country.

And, it is to be armed with tougher legislation by way of an amendment to the National Forestry Act 1984, which seeks prove of the source of suspected illegal timber, doubles the penalty to RM1 million, and increases the minimum mandatory jail sentence from one year to five years.

Until now the Suriname forest sector (both commercial loggers and community based forestry) lacks an appropriate set of rules and regulations for sustainable forest use and management.

The UNECE/FAO Forestry & Timber Section is organizing a Seminar on the "State of forests and forest management in the UNECE region in the context of current and future needs and challenges".

This Seminar takes place on World Forest Day and opens the Regional Forest Information Week (21-25 March). It is an important contribution to the International Year of Forests.
