Mondi sells 25,1% in Hadera venture

Paper and packaging group Mondi will sell 25,1% of its interest in Israeli-based Mondi Hadera Paper to its joint-venture partner Hadera Paper Ltd for €10,4-million.

Hadera Paper would then hold a 75% interest in the Israeli company, which owned a 145 000-t/y paper mill, which produced office and printing paper for the local market.

Mondi would retain a 25% interest.

The purchase consideration would be satisfied in cash and would be used to reduce Mondi’s net debt.

China removes tariffs on wood products from LDCs

According to the office of Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council, China had decided to remove tariffs on 4,762 commodities imported from 33 of the world’s Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Commodities with zero tariffs include wood products. The zero tariff treatment came into effect on 1 July 2010.

The countries involved are 26 African countries and 7 other countries, including Ethiopia, Benin, Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Maldives, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Paper companies eye another serving of black liquor tax benefits

Pulp mills may be getting back on the black liquor gravy train.

Paper and pulp makers, including a number of mills in southwest Alabama, collected $8 billion or more last year in federal cash and tax credits by doing what they've done for decades -- burning the carbon-rich leftovers from the pulp-making process to fuel their mills.

The liquid, known as black liquor, was declared eligible for alternative fuel tax credits if mill operators mixed in a little diesel fuel.
