Mexico City - The Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, together with officials from the Ministry of Development as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade attended the Informal Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change 'Implementing the Cancun Agreements' in Mexico City, Mexico.

The meeting was chaired by Mrs Patricia Espinosa, the President of the 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 6th Session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP6).

According to a press release from the Ministry of Development, the ministers and ambassadors responsible for climate change from 41 countries exchanged views on how to sustain the momentum of agreement reached in Cancun in 2010 as well as the road map and "deliverables" of the upcoming 17th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 7th Conference Meeting of Parties to Kyoto Protocol in Durban in December 2011.

At the meeting, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi said that despitelhe positive outcome of the COP16 and CMP6 held in Cancun, Mexico in December 2010, there are still unresolved and complex issues relating to mitigation, adoption, finance and technology transfer, and issues related to REDD+ that have to be addressed.

According to the press release, he said that divergent of views amongst parties needs to be narrowed down in order to move forward the negotiation process on these issues. In this regard, he stressed building on the success modality of COP16 and CMP6, the negotiation process should involve all parties in an open, transparent and inclusive manner.

The minister informed the meeting that Brunei Darussalam will continue to play its role and support the implementation of the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol and the successful outcome of the COP17 and CMP7 to be held in December 2011 in Durban, South Africa.
