Norway is providing Mexico with $15.3 million to fund environmental monitoring efforts aimed at reducing emissions of pollutants and slowing deforestation, the Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat said.

The project was approved at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which was held in the Caribbean resort city of Cancun from Nov. 28 to Dec. 10.

The funds will be used by the National Forestry Commission, or Conafor, to carry programs and projects that could include other countries.

"The methodologies and knowledge gained from this project could be shared with other countries to promote regional cooperation via the successful experiences in Mexico," the secretariat said.

Mexico is committed to implementing policies to reduce the effects of climate change by totally ending deforestation by 2020.
