Nashwaak Valley Wood Energy Inc. will be adding a second shift to its wood pellet plant near Fredericton, New Brunswick.

The company is co-owned by 125 local shareholders – most of whom are local woodlot owners. The plant has been open for a year.

President of Nashwaak Valley Wood Energy, Peter deMarsh, said after the holidays, the mill will be starting a second shift, employing 12 people.

“”The plant is running very well and we will be producing at our full capacity rate of 15,000 tonnes a year fairly consistently,” deMarsh said.

Nashwaak Valley makes wood pellets using machinery produced by Nakawic-based Pellet Systems International Inc., which boasts of using less energy than traditional pellet-making equipment.

Canada’s Atlantic region now has 10 pellet plants (6 in New Brunswick, 2 in Nova Scotia, and 2 in Newfoundland). Although the pellet consumption in Atlantic Canada is only about 50,000 tonnes a year, most of Canada’s wood pellet production is exported to Holland, Belgium, and Sweden.
