Export duties on roundwood: Russia vs. EU

According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Russia is to come to the terms in the field of export duties on roundwood. Moreover, Russia itself offered the EU to significantly increase  export duties on deciduous wood.

Russia is ready to increase export duties by tens %. It will mostly concern birch that is widely used in the Finnish industry, whereas in Russia this kind of wood is not practically processed by the Russian companies.

Tatarstan to construct new Forest Breeding and Seed Centre

Arkhangelsk region to get new project

Novye Lesnye Technologies (New Timber Technologies, St. Petersburg) is to invest over RUR11.8 mln (€ 300 th.) in construction of a mill for advanced timber processing in the Arkhangelsk region.

The mill is to produce wooden boards and chipboards with annual capacity making up 250 th. cubic meters and 325 th. cubic meters respectively.

Besides, the mill will have a sawmilling facility (100 th. cubic meters per year) and glued log production (15 th. cubic meters per year).

Ruukki Group to pull out of pulp mill and sawmill project in Russia

Ruukki Group, a Finland-based company that focuses on wood-based industrial business operations, has scrapped its plans to build a large pulp mill and sawmill in the Kostroma Oblast in Russia. reports Helsingin Sanomat..The company did not accept the contract changes requested by the Kostroma authorities and decided to pull out of the project. 
Ruukki is accusing the Kostroma local administration of contract violations and plans to seek damages in a local court of first instance.

Ilim Group Mills in Siberia Manufacture 367,000 tons of Pulp and Paper Products

St. Petersburg, Russia, May 3, 2011 - Over the first quarter of 2011 the Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk Branches of Ilim Group has manufactured 367,000 tons of pulp and paper products. This is 2.5% more than in January — March of the previous year.

This includes 309,000 tons of market pulp, which is a 2% percent increase from the similar period performance in 2010.

Market containerboard production has reached 58,000 tons, having gained 7%.

Softwood lumber demand jumps 18% last year

Global demand for softwood lumber increased by about 18 percent in 2010. This came after a year when wood consumption worldwide was the lowest it had been in almost 50 years. This upward trend in consumption has continued thus far in 2011, with total volume consumed being more than 20 percent higher than the same period in early 2010, according to the market publication Wood Resource Quarterly.

The first Swedish woodworking company in the East Siberia OOO "Rusforest-Magistralny" will be launched by RusForest group of companies in the first half of June in Magistralny village of Kazachinsko-Lensky District of Irkutsk Region. Russian Federation expects further co-op with China

The Sakha Republic had signed several documents on cooperation with China focusing mainly on timber extraction and processing but the two sides were also discussing joint oil and gas exploration projects according to China Daily last week.
Yegor Borisov said the focus of these documents was mainly on "China is eyeing construction of a sea transport corridor via the Sakha Republic and the Arctic Ocean, while Russian republics which wanted to establish links with Europe are also interested in the project," Borisov said.

St. Petersburg, Russia - Jul 21, 2011 - Over the first six months of 2011 the Branches of Ilim Group in Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk have produced 738,000 tons of pulp and paper products, which is 3% more as compared to the same period of the previous year.

This includes 623,000 tons of market pulp. This is 2% more than in January-June of 2010.

ANDRITZ to Rebuild Paper Machine for SFT Group, Russia

International technology Group ANDRITZ has received an order by SFT Group, a rapidly growing packaging producer in Russia, to rebuild and modernize a mothballed kraft paper machine after dismantling it at UPM’s Kymi mill in Finland and relocating it to SFT’s Kamenskaya mill in the Tver region, Russia.

The modernized board machine for the production of fluting and testliner will have a capacity of 215,000 t/a (design speed 1,050 m/min, trim width 4,600 mm). Start-up is scheduled for October 2012.
